When I finished graduate school and was released back into society, free time a-flowing, I began to compile a handwritten list titled “Hobbies“. I racked my brain for projects I wanted to do, talents I wanted to develop, and adventures I wanted to have. The list included: START A FOOD BLOG (check!), ROAD BIKING (check!), SCUBA DIVING (still in the works!), and though at the time I scribbled it down it was accompanied by a giant question mark- START A PODCAST (check!!!!!!)
I absolutely adore podcasts. I love hearing people tell stories out loud. It makes those stories seems so much more…human. I love hearing someone’s voice and laugh, not to mention the occasional accidental swear word. I just love it all, guys. I love the audio of life.
I do quite a bit of driving and everywhere I go I listen to an episode of something. I can’t count the number of conversations I have started by saying “So I was listening to this podcast…”. I just can’t help it, through podcasts I have learned SO much. One day on a drive from Tucson to Chandler (about a 1.5 hour drive), soon after jotting “PODCAST?” down on my hobby brainstorm list, I thought “I have things to say. I should learn to do this!“. I used the voice memo app on my phone to start recording fake show introductions and catch phrases. I would think out loud and record all my thoughts on potential show segments, my mission and goals and purpose, and who my co-host could possibly be.
Enter Erinn, my dear friend and fellow dietitian. She was game from the second I asked “have you ever had any interest in co-hosting a podcast? Because…I so want to have a podcast“. She brought so much more depth to the podcast planning and has wonderful strengths and skills I don’t have but we needed to make the show happen. She is truly my creative soulmate. Together we researched how to get started and reached out to wonderful mentors (we owe Kelsey of The Girl Next Door Podcast so very much for her time and guidance). We started with zero know-how but a lot of passion, bought all sorts of wrong recording gear but relied on generous return policies via Amazon Prime, and had no idea what to expect when we launched earlier this week but have felt nothing but joy and are so excited to have you listening along on The Table Chat Show!
I have been talking to anyone who will listen about Table Chat- neighbors at the mailbox, James the store manager at my local Verizon Wireless store, etc etc. With this has come a few frequently asked questions and I’d love to answer them here!
What is The Table Chat Show?
Table Chat is a dietitian-hosted podcast literally born between a pizza shop and a taco joint. It is hosted by my friend Erinn and me, and it is noteworthy to mention upon comparing childhood pictures we realized our identical bowl cuts make us look like we could have been twin sisters in the 90s. It started as a joke, but our official logo now features these bowl cuts. Table Chat is where we talk food, nutrition, and whatever else we feel like. We invite you to come sit around our table and chat, because the more you know, the more you can eat!
We have a lot of fun in each episode and hope our show helps remind you that while food is a big part of life, it is not the only part of life; it fuels the conversations we want to have and the things we need to do. Together, we hope to encourage you to have a more joyful and healthy relationship with food, educate you on whole eating and myth-free, evidence-based nutrition, and share and discuss passion for life and interests outside of food and nutrition.
Did you actually use any of your fake intro lines and catch phrases from your initial brainstorming?
Believe it or not, yes! It is actually where I came up with the name Table Chat in the first place! Thank you, voice memo app!
What can I expect in each episode?
In each episode we will cook a delicious dish (recipe always will be shared on our website and is easily printable!) or try a new food. And then over our food, we chat.
How often do you produce an episode?
We launched our first episode Monday and will bring you a new episode every Monday for the following two weeks! I know, we are so nice! After this time, you can expect a new show with *minimal* cursing every other Monday.
Is it free?
Where can I listen?
Right now you can listen to the show by subscribing to our show’s blog and listening via the media player on the website. You can also subscribe on iTunes for all episodes. I personally love using the Podcast App for iPhone, where I also get new episodes of my favorite shows as soon as they are available. We are working on getting connected to Stitcher Radio for Android users- hang tight!
And once you’ve started listening and you’re liking the show, we’d love a review on iTunes! The reviews help others find the show quicker, and this means more friends for all of us! If you have any topics suggestions, recipe suggestions, or just want to chat, contact us!
Thanks so much for the support! The next time you’re deciding what hobby to tackle next, I suggest dreaming big! Along the way you will probably purchase the wrong microphone, but in the end you might end up with something you feel very proud of.
